Starting Therapy

It might feel intimidating, or even frightening, to make that first contact with a therapist. It’s an important step toward feeling better, so here’s what getting started with me looks like.

Step 1: A free 15-minute consultation

I’ll want to know what prompted you to reach out. Usually that isn’t the full story of how you ended up seeking help, but it gives me clues about what that story might involve.

If you’ve been in therapy before, I’ll ask what was helpful, what didn’t help or felt uncomfortable, and how and why that therapy ended. Your answers help us both decide whether we’re a good fit.

Step 2: Your intake session

If we decide to work together, we’ll schedule an intake. You’ll complete paperwork online ahead of time. Then we’ll meet to go over your history and create an initial treatment plan. If you have a history of trauma, I’ll carefully limit how much we talk about it, so you don’t leave feeling triggered or flooded.

Ways to meet

  • Telehealth (video sessions)
  • In person at my office in Edina
  • Walk-and-talk sessions outdoors

You can also choose a blend of all three.

Making sessions work for you

You’re welcome to fidget, stim, limit eye contact, or take breaks. My office is accessible and sensory-friendly. My service dog, Wilson, is there every day, so let me know if you have allergies or a fear of dogs. If you need another accommodation, just ask.

Cost and insurance

I’m in network with many insurance plans and offer a sliding scale. See Policies for fees and the full list of plans.

Using insurance? You can book a consultation or your first session directly through my Headway booking page, which also checks your coverage and estimates your cost.
