It might feel intimidating or even frightening to make that first contact to have a brief consult with me. It’s an important step to take, however, as you seek to improve your health. What I want to do here is share a little about what that your experience will be like getting started in therapy.
If you have already been in therapy before, you can expect questions like what was helpful in your previous therapy, and how and why that therapy came to an end. I will also want to know about anything that didn’t help or felt uncomfortable in that therapy. These answers help me figure out if we are a good fit for therapy and what will be most helpful for you as a unique individual.
For everyone, whether you have been in therapy before or not, I will want to know what prompted you to make contact with me. Usually that is not the full story about how you ended up seeking help on your healing journey, but it gives me clues about what that story might involve.
If we decide after our consult to work together, we will schedule an intake where you will complete paperwork ahead of time. Then we will meet to go over your history and develop an initial treatment plan. If you have a history of trauma, I will carefully limit how much we talk about that trauma to help avoid triggering you.
You have some options for therapy with me. I offer telehealth (video based therapy) and walk and talk therapy where we meet in person in a local park. You can choose to do telehealth for some sessions and walk and talk for other sessions. I am also working to locate an office for in-person therapy sessions in the Twin Cities.
Give me a call to set up a consult to see if I might be able to help you on your healing quest.
